This resolution established for Israel to "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem". Likewise, it points out that the Israeli settlements "have no legal validity" and further "are imperilling the viability of the two-State solution", as it is a situation that does not contribute to peace.
In recent months, the UN has warned that Israeli constructions in Palestine have increased. About 430,000 Israelis currently occupy the West Bank and 200,000 are in East Jerusalem.
A call from Donald Trump caused Egypt to postpone the vote, but when it was further promoted, the United States decided to abstain, although the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon said that they expected the United States to veto "this shameful resolution."
"The Obama administration not only failed to protect Israel against this conspiracy at the UN, but collided with it behind the scenes" and at light of Trump's arrival, he added "Israel looks forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump and all our friends in Congress, both Republican and Democrat, to eliminate the damaging effects of this absurd resolution".
After the decision, Benjamin Netanyahu's ministers are banned from traveling or having diplomatic relations with the 12 countries that voted in favor for a month. Netanyahu, has said that this is an "anti-Israel" resolution.
For now, analysts say that Netanyahu's government will come up with economic measures. Israel has already canceled its financial support for Senegal and suspended funding for four UN agencies.
