You express very well that offensive language incites intolerance and contributes to the revival of violence and armed conflict. As revolutionary armed insurgency born out of systematic forms of persecution and proscription to alternative ideas, the FARC-EP has taken the historic decision to transform into a legal political movement, which will exercise its proselytizing activities without resorting to any form of violence. That can only be possible if we effectively open the door to peaceful coexistence, if we all bury the hatred and learn to discuss without insulting the contrary.
The fact that a group of intellectuals, academics, businessmen and journalists from diverse ideological and political spectrum express a position like you set out in your letter, is already showing that many things are changing for the better in Colombia. We want to express our full identification with your opinion as well as our intention to join the long list of signatories of the letter.
We will enter the political struggle convinced of the possibility of achieving real democracy, peaceful coexistence, civilized confrontation of ideas. The new country that we dream for our children will require utmost respect among political adversaries. We hope that all Colombians will appropriate this as a principle, a fundamental value, the prayer of each morning.
Comandante of the Central High Command of the FARC-EP
