The Cuban Constitution of 1976 set in its preamble the dream of José Martí, "I want the first law of our Republic to be the tribute of Cubans to the full dignity of man." The early death of the apostle in Dos Ríos prevented him from seeing his purpose come true, but it could not prevent his idea to be picked up by the other great man of Cuba, Fidel, to whom nature, history and the struggle conferred him the glory of making that beautiful slogan reality in his homeland.
Today on his ninetieth birthday we recall the heartfelt words of the Comandante, pronounced during the ceremony in which Cuba paid tribute to Ernesto Guevara de la Serna after the news of his murder. Using his words, and with the same confidence, we declare that if we are asked for the model of the new man, the paradigm of a revolutionary and universal statesman, without hesitation we would respond Fidel, always Fidel.
If the dimensions of a human being were measured by the size of the enemies who hate him and would have wanted to beat him, perhaps none could add as many and as perverse as Fidel does. US imperialism, with all its power and arrogance, the greatest tyrants that have plagued the world during the past six decades, the cruellest of all mafias, the fury of capital and landlordism of the five continents. Not even all of them together could do anything against him.
At the same time, if the magnitude of a human soul were measured by the beings who love, admire and applaud him, few could compete with Fidel in the huge worship and singular respect professed by all the peoples of world, without exception. Children, men, women and elderly people from Asia, Africa, Our America and even from the empire unite excitedly to thank him for his solidarity, support for their causes, his voice of encouragement and detachment.
The story goes that Bolivar on horseback in the Andes peeped the horizon while he dreamt about arriving with his liberating army to Brazil, Cuba and Florida, to bring them the flame of independence and justice. That mythical figure was used by Fidel in his dream of wearing the same flag, with the name of revolution and socialism on it, to the southern tip of Latin America, and even beyond the Atlantic, to the subjugated and downtrodden black Africa.
That is why all Cuba is celebrating today, receiving congratulations from the remotest places on the planet. Fidel is turning ninety and from the eternal memory he is accompanied by all great revolutionaries of the past. To them, to all global, regional and local personalities, the vast multitude of voices that sing Happy Birthday in the whole world today, we unite our sincere and solemn proletarian revolutionary and Bolivarian embrace.
The FARC-EP raised up in arms in Colombia against an anti-democratic and violent regime, are in Havana in talks with the government of our country, in order to achieve the end of conflict and the causes that originated it. Needless to recall the role played by the historic leadership of the Cuban revolution in this search for a political and civilized solution. To Fidel, we offer peace in our country as our anniversary gift. Thank you for existing, Comandante.
