The Colombian State, represented by the Government of President Juan Manuel Santos, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - People's Army, reached a pact after five years of delicate and complex negotiations.
The Peace Process in Havana was surrounded by the understanding and valuable collaboration of the Republic of Cuba, the Kingdom of Norway, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Chile, as guarantor and companion countries, advancing in worldwide solidarity.
People, governments, regional organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean, the European Union, the UN, Churches, personalities led by Pope Francis, parliaments, NGOs, social and cultural movements, artists, writers, journalists, sportsmen and even the government of the United States, among others, participated with their good offices in order for the parties to achieve -not without ups and downs- the signing of the Final Agreement. To all: our appreciation and gratitude.
Now we enter the stage of implementation of the agreements, perhaps the most delicate part, since although the enemies of peace are few, they have an immense power of destabilization, they profit from the war and will not give up easily on their privileges.
In their desperation, they resort to psychological warfare, expanding false rumors and appealing to lies and slander in order to gain supporters within the social sectors that they themselves maintain in ignorance. On the other hand, national and regional plans are being articulated in order to assassinate left winged leaders and human rights defenders, without the government showing tangible results in the dismantling of paramilitary groups that still exist today, nor with social action to guarantee life and honor of the citizens of the areas that have been historically involved in the conflict.
That is why denunciation, collaboration and international solidarity acquire renewed importance at this moment. They will be essential if paramilitary organizations are to be disarmed and dismantled in Colombia in order for full guarantees to be given to former guerrillas in the exercise of political action, so that the parties feel obliged to respect the spirit and letter of the signed agreements. The correct and just implementation of the Final Agreement of Havana and Bogotá depends on Colombia´s undertaking of the path of peaceful renewal and effective democratization, for the communities that have been abandoned for decades to start receiving the benefits of the long yearned peace.
