With regard to the latter, it was agreed that from June 1st until the 20th, all members of the FARC-EP, including the militias, will have left arms and transitioned to legality. It was established that the United Nations would receive the weapons, deposit them in the containers and certify the weapons of each member of the FARC-EP.
In a meeting held two days later, it was determined that the lay down of weapons would be done in three steps: on June 7, 30%, on June 14, 30% and on June 20 the remaining 40%. Today, in all Transitional Zones and Points of Normalization, all of the FARC-EP is complying with its word. That’s what we are on right now in Caño Indio.
We had thought in joint with the National Government, to celebrate a solemn act here, with the participation of the President of the Republic, as a clear demonstration before the world of the irreversible advances of the Havana Agreements. Occupations of the President prevented their presence, which does not prevent the FARC from announcing its compliance to the world.
It is what brings us together this afternoon: the effective beginning of our Farewell to Arms. 30% of our armaments have been put into the hands of the United Nations, which has deposited them in their containers and immediately certified the lay down of weapons of each of our combatants. We will never again use violence, our only weapon will be the word, we promised it and we will fulfill it, without weeping or cries.
The use of weapons made the Final Agreement possible, which will democratize Colombia and bring justice to its people. We will no longer need them. The Colombian people have conquered a higher stage in the recognition of their human and political condition. We know that the people will not let these achievements be taken away in any way. Whoever tries it will perish politically, peace belongs to everyone.
We are grateful for the diligence shown by the government of President Santos in the issuance of decrees and the process of laws that will guarantee our physical, legal and socioeconomic security, as well as in the implementation of the different Verification and International Accompaniment mechanisms. This is how we have shielded piece so that nothing can impede it.
The open and legal political struggle awaits us, we are moving towards it, confident in the wisdom of the Colombian people and their firm decision to isolate the spokespersons and architects of war and violence. Thanks to its struggle, a new Colombia is being born and we are proud to be part of it. History will recognize the enormous dimension of this step.
