On Wednesday 16 March, Yadil José Sanguino, mayor of San Calixto, Norte de Santander, was targeted by the self proclaimed paramilitary group called Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (A.G.C.). The mayor received text messages via social networks threatening him and his family.

The messages said the AGC know his whereabouts and know where his family lives. The paramilitaries also posted photos of the mayor’s parents. The main accusation and threat relates to the alleged collaboration the mayor has given to the insurgent groups such as ELN and EPL and to his active participation in the building of peace with social justice through the support to the peace process between the National Government and the FARC-EP.

The Peasant Association of Catatumbo (Asociación Campesina del Catatumbo) while denouncing this new case of threats also underlines in a press release that this is “the way the paramilitaries threaten and instil fear in the society. In other words what they are saying to people is: support the peace process and you are dead”.

The Association called on the Government to implement the safety measures and mechanism recommended in the Final Peace Agreement and to ensure the life of the mayor of San Calixto and his family is protected.
