The special envoy of the European Union (EU) for Peace in Colombia, Eamon Gilmore, condemned the murder of two former FARC guerrillas who participated in electoral activities in the Colombian department of Antioquia, and called for a thorough investigation of the incident.

"We condemn the murder of two members of the FARC political party on Wednesday in Antioquia and express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased," Gilmore said in Washington, where he participated in a dialogue at the Center for International and Strategic Studies in the US capital. .

The representative of the EU expressed the importance of clarifying the circumstances of the murder "to guarantee the security of local communities and the protection of human rights".

"It is vital that all people can exercise their right to political participation in a safe and supportive environment, particularly in the light of the upcoming presidential and congressional elections" that the former guerrilla organization, now a political party will contest. "This is essential for the success and sustainability of the peace process in Colombia," added Gilmore.
